MYS auditions are held in the spring every year.  Additional auditions are held in August for select instruments.

 

Junior String Orchestra

Grades 1-5

String musicians only (violin, viola, cello, double bass)

 

Scales – 2 Major and 2 melodic minor of your choice – played from memory in one octave

 

Solo – solo that shows technique and tone quality.  Memorization is not required; no accompaniment.  A copy of the solo with each measure numbered is required for the conductor.   There is no time length requirement.

 

Sight-reading – Material is chosen by the conductor from orchestra literature.  Observe time and key signatures, rhythms, dynamics, phrasing, style, etc.

 

String Orchestra

Grades 5-9

Strings and percussion


Scales – 2 Major and 2 melodic minor of your choice – played from memory – in two octaves; String Bass in one octave…minimum

 

Solo – 3 to 4 minutes of a solo that shows technique and tone quality.  Memorization is not required; no accompaniment.  A copy of the solo with each measure numbered is required for the conductor

 

 

Sight-reading – Material is chosen by the conductor from orchestra literature.  Observe time and key signatures, rhythms, dynamics, phrasing, style, etc.  BRASS – Be prepared to transpose!

 

Concert Orchestra

Grades 8-12

Strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion

 

Scales – 2 Major and 2 melodic minor of your choice – played from memory:

Violin, Viola, Cello in 3 octaves;

String Bass in 2 octaves

Winds: Demonstrate proficiency with as many octaves as possible. 

Brass: Demonstrate proficiency with as many octaves as possible.

Clarinets:  Prepare scales on A Clarinet (if you play one).

Flute:  Prepare scales on Piccolo (if you play one).

Oboes: Prepare scales on an English Horn (if you play one).

Percussion: Will have the opportunity to play with all orchestras when needed.  Melodic Percussion instruments must be brought by students.  Prepare a solo on a mallet instrument, show proficiency on Tympani and Snare drums.

 

 

AUDITION FEE & TUITION

 

FEES*- A $30 Audition Fee must be included with the Application to Audition; if accepted into MYS this fee will be applied towards tuition.

 

Each family pays the following fees: $30 Family Enrollment Fee per year; $220 Tuition per student, $170 Tuition for Junior Strings.

 

*Fees are tentative and are subject to minor changes if necessary.
